New Options for Elder Living: Golden Girls

I really think there's a change in how people are thinking of living in retirement. That's why I so liked Funny About Money's ruminations on the group of independent 80 year olds she met.

Here's something I read today, about older singles taking in roommates. It's sometimes, but not always, because of financial need. It strikes me as a good way to deal with the perhaps too-big unsellable-in-this-market house.

Check it out.

Would you take in a roommate?

  1. A brilliant idea in theory and in practice too, if you do find someone you trust and like. Maybe two friends would like to live together. I agree, that everything should be checked out and written down, even between friends. But there are endless benefits too in the idea of sharing a house/apartment! Most women ( married ) have shared their home already, and are adjusted to compromises in their former life. So why not?

  2. I think it might work for the 50 somethings who are still working. It isn't option I'd like to consider at my age. I already live in a small house, mortgage paid, convenient to shopping and public transportation. Things I considered years ago. I also have children/grands nearby who I think (hope!) I can count on to check on me if needs be in the future.

  3. 4 widowed elderly siblings shared a home in the neighborhood I grew up in. They were a lovely family and got along very well.

As children, my sister and I talked about living together should unfortunate circumstances come our way late in life. It's a good feeling to have that sense of security in today's uncertain times...

  4. I'd love to have a good roomie..I miss that from college. The problem is finding the right match (and one who loves my big dogs!)

  5. @metscan--Good point at the end! I wonder if one could have a house set up to provide lots of private space...must give this more thought.

@darla--You have a perfect situation. Could you share your city?

@GAB--Oh, you are so lucky to have sisters.

@Suzy--As I mentioned to metscan, I'm thinking about dividing a space into private and shared spaces. This would be possible in my house even though it is on the small side and only 1 story.

  6. I hope to find intergenerational housing, such as a co-op. Really do not want to live with only elders, if not under my rood at least nearby. Sitting on a bench watching little ones hop home from school is such a delight.

  7. @Duchesse-That is a perfect idea. Similar to ideas espoused in "A Pattern Language."
