As it happens, I am an ICON. Yes, on Halloween, one of my students came to school dressed as---me. She was wearing a long cardi, a long tank, skinny jeans, a scarf and ballet flats. The pièce de résistance: glasses on a chain. Before I realized what she was doing, I told her she looked nice. I guess I like how I dress!
Sadly, I was disappointment to her that day: I had to go to a post-funeral service at the home of an acquaintance. Therefore, I did not wear my usual garb. With my usual jeans, I wore two thrifted iconic pieces: a black St John knit jacket and my Feux de Route Hermes scarf (I'm almost certain it's not a fake). Well! Many compliments at the informal service, delivered mainly to Mr. FS. He said, "I've never seen before the power of an accessory." Yes, he said it.
Have you ever caused a minor sensation with an iconic item?
Yes, actually, I did once when I was about 19 and carrying a box purse. You know, a wooden box with paint and fake jewels with a leather handle and a sort of latch that kept it all shut? The construction site I walked past on the way to work was very impressed with my box purse. Mainly because my short skirt was caught up in it showing everything up to the waist.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I hang with the sort of folks who could properly appreciate an Hermes scarf. I certainly wouldn't recognize one unless someone waved a tag under my nose. A work colleague actually did this once with an Armani scarf she got for Christmas. It was a very pretty scarf, but somehow I wasn't as impressed with it after the tag wave as I was before.
If I ran with folks who could appreciate such items, I might be more interested in acquiring such things, but as it stands, I don't see an Hermes or an Armani anything in my future.
You sound stylish. The only example I can think of as myself in an iconic item is when I was three and used to wear little sunglasses with white frames. This was the early 1970's and they looked very Hollywood glamorous, especially on a three year old. I would wear them today if I still had them.
ReplyDeleteYour Burberry raincoat is iconic too!
ReplyDeleteI own many Hermes scarves, and
would never "wave the tag". Actually, I remove the tag. I don't care whether people recognize them or not, to me they are just pleasing expressions of the silk weaver's craft.
I'd take someone costuming herself as you as a compliment!
indeed i had a student dress as me for halloween one year as well tee hee
ReplyDeletehmm iconic items must be kept secret as i blog pseudonymously, but they are all "vintage" or from Tiffany
I love this: student comes to school dressed as prof! :-)
ReplyDeleteWell, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
The Feux de Route design is gorgeous...I'll bet it was mighty fine with a black St John knit.
@Shelley--Believe me, no one knew the labels on my outfit--and, if they did, they would assume they were fakes. Somehow the items exuded iconicity.
ReplyDelete@Patience--i'm not very stylish alas. In fact, I'm kind of scruffy.
@Duchesse--But I've only worn it once--must remember to wear it.
@femomhist--Great name! Stopped by your blog as well. Apparently there's a picture somewhere--if I can get a hold of it, I'll post it.
@Funny--It was sweet! Now you need to get a scarf to go with your new St J suit.
